What gets in the way at home
- Art is treated as the reward after real work, so it gets cut whenever time is short.
- Adults correct too early. A child told their sky is the wrong blue stops experimenting, which is the part that was working.
- Materials become the barrier. Most of what matters at this age can be done with a pencil and whatever paper is nearby.
Let the making come before the explaining
Do the activity first and talk about it afterwards. A child who has already mixed the colours understands the explanation immediately.
Rhymes carry the same benefit for language that colour mixing does for observation, so alternate between them.
