What this stage is really for
- The goal is exposure and recognition, not fluency. Pushing for mastery here usually creates resistance that costs more later.
- Attention runs to a few minutes at this age, so a lesson that ends while the child is still interested is doing its job.
- Children arrive at very different points. A child who is not yet recognising letters is not behind; they simply need more contact with them.
Little and often, and let them repeat
Two or three short sessions a week is plenty at this stage, and repeating a favourite lesson is genuinely useful rather than wasted time.
When a subject clicks, follow it. A child who wants to do the colours lesson four times is consolidating, not stalling.
