Free Educational Activities for 7 Year Olds

Seven is the age at which a child stops learning to read and starts reading to learn. Every other subject quietly begins to depend on it, and a seven year old who reads slowly will look weak at science when the real problem is the question, not the science.

In maths, multiplication arrives properly. It is the first idea that does not yield to counting, so it is the first place where a child needs a method rather than more effort.

Two levels fit this age

Children of the same age sit across two levels, and the right one is often different from subject to subject. Nothing is locked, so try both.

The two things that decide a seven year old's year

  • Comprehension overtakes decoding. Answering a question about a passage is a different skill from reading the passage, and it needs separate practice.
  • Times tables become the bottleneck. A child who knows their tables finds long multiplication tedious. A child who does not finds it impossible.
  • Independence becomes realistic. Seven is usually the first age where a child will start and finish a lesson without an adult in the room.

Where to put the time

Every subject is open at this age. These are the ones that carry the most weight, and why.

English
Comprehension, tenses, and writing more than one sentence at a time.
Maths
Multiplication and division, fractions, time and measurement.
Science
Plant life cycles, matter, food chains, light and sound.
Pakistan Studies
Places, symbols and the beginnings of history as a subject.

Lessons a 7 year old would open

Real lessons from the levels above, picked across subjects. Each one opens without an account.

A week that works at seven

  1. 1Four sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes, with one of them on tables specifically. Little and often beats one long drill.
  2. 2Alternate a reading lesson with a maths lesson. Mixing subjects in a week retains better than blocking one subject for days.
  3. 3Let them pick one lesson a week. Choice is what keeps a seven year old coming back, and every lesson on the level is a reasonable choice.

Questions parents ask

What should a 7 year old be able to do?
Read a short passage and answer questions about it, recall the two, five and ten times tables, write several connected sentences, and tell the time. Gaps in any one of those are common and are worth targeted practice rather than general worry.
My child reads well but hates maths. Where do I start?
Start below where they are. Most maths avoidance at seven is avoidance of being wrong. A week of lessons they can finish rebuilds more than a week of correction does.
Are the lessons free?
Yes, all 236 of them, across every level and subject. There is no subscription, no advertising and no account required to open one.
