The Honest Case for Paying
There is one, and it is not the case the marketing makes. A subscription is worth it when the thing standing between your child and progress is not content, it is friction.

Advantages of free: no commitment, no cancellation to remember, no renewal price change, and you can run three of them at once while you work out which your child prefers.
Disadvantages of free: weaker reporting, fewer options past age eight, variable support, and on the ad-supported ones a genuine attention cost.
A Two Week Test That Settles It
Do not decide this by reading reviews. Decide it by watching your child for a fortnight, and structure it so the answer is unambiguous.
Week one: install one free app that matches your child’s level and nothing else. Do not sit with them beyond the first session. At the end of the week you are answering one question, which is whether they opened it without being asked.
