Maths anxiety usually starts with a gap, not a lack of ability. A child who never fully secured number bonds to ten will struggle with addition to twenty, then with carrying, then with everything built on top. Finding the gap matters more than pushing ahead.
These 28 maths lessons move from counting objects at playgroup to decimals, percentages, area and order of operations in Grade 5. Each gives an answer immediately, so a mistake gets corrected while the child is still thinking about it rather than a day later.

The gaps that cause trouble later
- Counting out loud is not the same as understanding quantity. A child can recite to twenty and still not know that seven objects are more than five.
- Number bonds to ten are the hinge. Without instant recall of the pairs that make ten, every later addition becomes slow finger counting, and word problems become impossible to hold in the head.
- Times tables are usually drilled in order, so a child who knows the four times table forwards cannot answer 7 times 4 out of sequence. Practice needs shuffling.
- Word problems fail for reading reasons as often as maths reasons. If your child can do 12 minus 5 but not a story about 12 sweets, the problem is comprehension.
Find the gap before moving on
Start one level below where you think your child is. If they clear it easily you have lost five minutes and gained certainty. If they do not, you have found the gap that was going to cause trouble in a year.
Short and daily beats long and occasional for arithmetic in particular, because recall speed is what you are building. When a topic clicks, move on the same day rather than drilling it flat.
