Why science gets memorised instead of understood
- Vocabulary arrives before meaning. A child can label a diagram of a plant and have no idea what a root actually does, which shows up the moment a question is phrased differently.
- Everyday intuition contradicts the science. Heavy things feel like they should fall faster, and the sun clearly looks like it moves. Those beliefs need naming and addressing, not skipping.
- Science is usually taught without anything to touch. A lesson about materials means little until a child has actually compared a metal spoon and a plastic one.
- Second language learners carry a double load: the concept and the English word for it at once. Explaining the idea in the stronger language first almost always speeds things up.
Follow the question your child actually asked
Science holds attention when it answers something a child wondered about that week. If they asked why the moon changes shape, do the space lesson next, whatever order the curriculum suggests.
Pair a lesson with one real object where you can. Five minutes comparing what floats in a bowl of water does more for the materials lesson than reading it twice.
