What separates the children who cope
- Times tables decide the pace of everything numerical. A child still calculating them each time runs out of working memory before finishing a longer problem.
- Writing now needs to hold together across several sentences, which is a different skill from writing one correct sentence.
- Science moves to things that cannot be seen directly, such as states of matter and the solar system, so explanation has to do the work observation used to.
Fix the foundation, not the symptom
When Grade 3 work feels hard, the cause is usually a Grade 1 or 2 gap rather than the current topic. Drop back for a week and the difficulty often disappears.
Times tables are worth ten minutes a day on their own, practised out of order, until recall is instant.
