- Reading becomes fluent enough to mask comprehension gaps. A child can read a passage aloud perfectly and not be able to say what happened in it.
- Carrying and borrowing get taught as procedures. A child who follows the steps without understanding place value stops being able to check their own work.
- Multiplication arrives as a new idea, and children who have not secured repeated addition find it lands as something to memorise.
Ask them to explain the answer
After a lesson, ask your child how they got the answer rather than whether it was right. Explaining exposes the gaps that a correct answer hides.
