Free Learning for 4 Year Olds: Playgroup and KG Lessons

Four is the age that straddles two levels. A child who is still naming pictures belongs in Playgroup; a child who is starting to hear the first sound in a word is ready for Kindergarten. Most four year olds will move between the two for several months, and that is normal.

Start on Playgroup and move up the moment lessons feel easy. Nothing is locked, so switching levels costs nothing and there is no penalty for going back down for a subject that is harder than the rest.

Two levels fit this age

Children of the same age sit across two levels, and the right one is often different from subject to subject. Nothing is locked, so try both.

The shift that happens at four

  • Letter names and letter sounds separate. A child can sing the alphabet perfectly and still not hear that 'cat' begins with a c sound. These are two different skills and the second one is the one reading depends on.
  • Counting turns into quantity. The last number said becomes how many there are, rather than the end of a rhyme.
  • Answers get deliberate. Four year olds start choosing rather than tapping, which is the point at which a wrong answer becomes useful information instead of noise.

Where to put the time

Every subject is open at this age. These are the ones that carry the most weight, and why.

English
Letter sounds, first blends and picture matching. The bridge into reading.
Maths
Counting to twenty, more and less, and first shapes.
Urdu
Haroof and first sounds, taught in script from the start for bilingual households.
Science
Starts at Kindergarten: living and non living, weather, the senses.

Lessons a 4 year old would open

Real lessons from the levels above, picked across subjects. Each one opens without an account.

A week that works at four

  1. 1Three sessions of one or two lessons. Ten minutes is a long session at this age.
  2. 2Alternate a letters lesson with a numbers lesson rather than doing four of either. Mixing beats blocking for retention at every age, and it keeps a four year old from tiring of one subject.
  3. 3Use the replay. A lesson taken a second time draws different questions, so a child who scores badly can try again without meeting the same items.

Questions parents ask

Playgroup or Kindergarten for a 4 year old?
Start on Playgroup for a week. If your child is finishing lessons quickly and not getting things wrong, move to Kindergarten. You can use different levels for different subjects.
How much screen time is reasonable at four?
Short and shared beats long and solo. Ten minutes of a lesson someone is watching with you is worth more than an hour alone, and the lessons are built in five minute pieces for that reason.
Do I need to pay for anything?
No. Every lesson at every level is free, with no advertising, no in app purchase and no account required to start.
