What the Playgroup English course covers

This is a listening course before it is a reading one. Your child meets the sounds of the alphabet in two halves, A to M and then N to Z, and finishes on a handful of first words. Nothing asks them to read; every prompt is spoken.

The Playgroup English course is two units, taken in order: First Sounds and Letters A to M and Letters N to Z and First Words.

There are 4 lessons here and 29 questions in total, roughly 20 minutes of teaching. At this age two or three short sittings a week is plenty, and a child who wants to repeat a lesson is consolidating rather than stalling.

This is where English starts on the site. Nothing is locked, so if these lessons are easy the next grade is one tap away, and if they are hard the grade below is too.

How English is taught here

English on this site is a reading course before it is anything else. Children start with the sounds letters make rather than their names, move to blending those sounds into whole words, and only then meet sentences, punctuation and the parts of speech that describe them.

Levels and scoring

Each lesson plays at Explorer, Challenger or Champion. Only first-try answers count towards stars, so a retry never inflates a score, and a lesson is mastered at 90 percent at Challenger or above. See how a lesson works for the full explanation.

How long does Playgroup English take?

4 short lessons and 29 questions, roughly 20 minutes in all. There is no schedule to keep and nothing expires, so a few minutes at a time is a perfectly good way to do it.

Is my child old enough for Playgroup English?

Ages 3 to 4 is the guide, but go by what your child can already do rather than by age. Nothing is locked for a visitor, so trying the level above or below costs nothing and takes one tap.

Is Playgroup English free?

Yes, and without the usual catch. No account is needed, there is no advertising and there are no in-app purchases. It also works with no connection once the site is added to a home screen, or through the free Android app.

My child knows the alphabet. Where should they start?

Start at kindergarten rather than Grade 1. Knowing letter names is not the same as knowing letter sounds, and the kindergarten units separate the two deliberately. If the sound work is easy, moving up takes one tap.
