Safe is the vaguest word in this category. It covers advertising, data collection, chat with strangers, in-app purchases and what happens when an app hands a child an AI chatbot, and those five things need completely different checks.
The scale is worth stating plainly. Common Sense Media reported in 2026 that nearly nine in ten children now use AI, with 89 percent using it for fun and 85 percent for school. Three quarters said their school had discussed what they may and may not use it for; only just over half had been taught to use it safely. Whatever else is on the tablet, that is already in the house.
This is not a list of apps to trust blindly. It is a set of checks you can run in five minutes on any app, plus what those checks turn up on the ones most families are choosing between.
The Four Risks Parents Actually Have
- Advertising aimed at someone who cannot recognise it. A five year old cannot reliably tell an advert from content, which is what makes ad-supported children’s apps a different problem from ad-supported adult ones. This is the most common risk and the easiest to eliminate.
- Data collected before anything opens. Plenty of free apps ask for an email address and a child’s date of birth before the first lesson. Sometimes that is for progress saving. Sometimes it is the product.
- Contact with other people. Any app with sharing, comments or multiplayer is a place a child can meet a stranger. Moderation varies enormously and the risk is not theoretical.
- Unsupervised AI. An app with a chatbot in it can produce anything, and the failure mode is not usually something shocking. It is a confident wrong answer that a child believes, which is quieter and more likely.
The Five Minute Check
Run this before installing anything, on any app, including the ones recommended below.
Open it and count the adverts. Not in the store listing, in the app. Give it three minutes of a child’s typical use. Free and ad-free together usually means a non-profit, a public broadcaster or a deliberately free product, and it is worth knowing which.
Try to start without an account. If you can, the app is not collecting anything about your child before you have decided to trust it. If you cannot, note exactly what it asked for. An email address is ordinary. A date of birth, a photo or a contact list is not.
Look for anywhere another person could appear. Search for words like share, community, friends, multiplayer or comments in the interface. If they exist, find the setting that turns them off before your child opens it, not after.
Check the purchase surface. Open the shop if there is one. An app that puts a buy button in front of a child every few screens has made a choice about who it is selling to.
Check whether it works offline. This is a safety feature that is rarely described as one. An app that works in aeroplane mode can be handed over with the connection switched off entirely, which closes several risks at once.
Apps That Pass These Checks

Where the Common Choices Fall Down
Being useful and being safe are separate questions, and some genuinely good tools carry a caveat worth knowing.
Math Playground is free, needs no account and covers Grades K to 6 well, and it displays advertising. For a nine year old with an adult nearby that may be a fair trade. For a five year old alone it is exactly the risk described above.
Scratch is free, excellent and has a public community where children share projects and comment on each other’s work. It is moderated and the community is one of the reasons Scratch is good. It is still a place where a child interacts with strangers, so it is a supervised activity rather than an unsupervised one.
Several platforms, including Epic, Reading Eggs, SplashLearn and Lingokids, publish no price on their public sites. That is not a safety issue in itself, but it means you cannot evaluate the commercial relationship before handing over an email address, which is a reasonable thing to weigh.
Benefits of getting this right: a tablet you can hand over without supervising every minute, no unexpected charges, and a child whose attention is not being sold. Drawbacks of being strict: you will rule out some good apps, and the ad-free free options are concentrated in the under-eight range, so an older child leaves you with fewer choices.
AI Features Need Their Own Rule
An AI tutor is genuinely useful for the moment a child is stuck and nobody is available, and it is the one feature that should never run unsupervised for a young child. Two rules cover most of it.
First, treat it as a help button, not a lesson. A child who asks it to explain a step gets value. A child who hands it the whole worksheet learns nothing and cannot tell when the answer is wrong.
Second, check what it does with what the child types. If an app cannot tell you plainly, that is your answer. Do these four things once, on the device rather than in a settings guide, and most of the risk goes away.
Turn off in-app purchases at the operating system level. Both iOS and Android allow this, and it removes the entire category rather than trusting each app.
Install with the account, use without it. Where an app allows it, set it up yourself and then hand over a device with the shop signed out.
Use aeroplane mode deliberately. For an app that works offline, switching the connection off during use closes advertising, chat and data collection at once. This is the single most effective control available and it costs nothing.
Re-check every few months. Apps change. A free ad-free app that adds advertising in an update will not tell you, and the only reliable way to know is to open it yourself occasionally and watch for three minutes.
